The stars mix with light pollution from the city of Sault Ste. Marie, as seen from the edge of Bar River Road, roughly 6 km south of Echo Bay, ON.

This was going to be another attempt at star trails, and this photo was only meant to be a quick preview to check the composition in the darkness. However, it was late and a bunch of dogs were barking at us and were likely keeping people awake, so we decided to call it a night.

This is a really nice image, Travis. I've been trying to get some simpler pictures recently but so far no luck. I was wondering if there are any basic tips you can give me to help point me in the right direction? Is there anything specific that needs to be used (camera settings, equipment etc) or is it just a question of long shutter speeds and patience? Thanks in advance! :)

Anyway, great work, mate! This really does look great!

Thanks, and thank you for the :+fav:. If you want to photograph stars without any star trail motion, I would think that boosting the ISO and lowering the aperture value would help, but of course that increases noise and decreases your DOF, so it's a trade off. Star trails on the other hand only require a longer shutter speed, and you can still leave your ISO somewhat low and set your aperture to a more reasonable value. I don't know if that helps or not, but let me know if you have any other questions.

I like how the sky kind of envelopes and frames the tree, making the tree the center of attention, even though the sky is much more beautiful.
